EDITOR—Why are Makerere University documents always forged? I think I know the reason.
At Makerere, we pay for everything from tuition, accommodation to transcripts which we are entitled to getting as soon as we finish our courses.

After graduating, we have to pay for transcripts yet we have been paying tuition! The worst thing is that even after paying that money, we are still tossed from one office to the next, week after week. That is not all.

After finally getting the transcript, we are asked to have them certified and have to pay sh3,000 for each copy certified. They of course do not certify the original but the duplicates photocopied from the original. This money must be paid in the bank and attracts a bank charge of sh2,000.

It is easy to calculate how much money desperate graduates have to part with to have these documents certified. Why is it that they do not certify the original instead of photocopies so that we don't have to pay more and more each time we need a certified copy?

Even after paying that money, there is no guarantee that you will get the certified copies when you need them! It takes weeks and sometimes even months.

They always give excuses that the system has broken down or that something else has happened! All that one is sweating for is getting a Makerere stamp and the academic registrar’s signature!

Because the process is so frustrating, costly and time-consuming, people find it easier to forge these documents.

The only way to sanitise the system at Makerere is to sack all the dead wood in Senate Building and replace them with fresh blood who are energetic and interested in their work and can make Makerere rise and shine again. As long as the despicable apathy remains at Makerere, the university’s documents will always be forged!
