Computer literacy still a mirage!

Despite the persistent complaints about high university fees in private universities, computer literacy seems to be a privilege.

Despite the persistent complaints about high university fees in private universities, computer literacy seems to be a privilege.

At Makerere University, apart from the short time allocated (30 minutes) to access computers at particular hours in the main library and the faculty labs, there is no other opportunity accorded to students to access computers. To make matters worse, the staff are not courteous.

They are so arrogant they render the facilities inaccessible to students.

Some even demand payment when the computers are supposed to be used by the students! This comes with the demand for typed courseworks and projects with little regard to the students’ financial position. Most students don’t have the money to pay for the typing and printing of their work and yet the university has computers. This explains why many undergraduate students can barely use computer despite living in the information age. Their websites are worse. They are always outdated, one cannot even download simple up-to-date forms.

Even with experts and lecturers in these institutions, the forms available are about three years old!
