THE European Union (EU) has launched a 20m Euros (about sh44b) programme for the rehabilitation of districts recovering from the LRA war. Teso, Karamoja, Acholi Lango regions will benefit from the programme.

Speaking at the launch yesterday at the Prime Minister’s office in Kampala, EU ambassador Vincent De Visscher said they will also construct the 600km security roads in Karamoja.
The EU called on NGOs to submit their proposals for the project.

De Visscher said 3.3m Euros had been budgeted for proposals for Teso and Karamoja, which would include “support to livelihood opportunities and education.”

Another sh1m Euros has been allocated to proposals for the Acholi and Lango regions, which would focus on supporting conflict resolution and peace building initiatives, he added. NGOs will work with district authorities in implementing the programme.

The ambassador revealed that the EU will convene a meeting with ministers of Uganda, Kenya and Sudan focusing on nomadism and small arms control to curb insecurity in the region.
