The quiz was part of the week-long activities held recently to mark the National Science Week, the first of its kind in the country. It was organised by the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology and sponsored by the World Bank. Each school was represented by two students.
Each of the winning schools received a glass plaque, while each student from the winning schools received a parcel of science books.
Handing over the prizes, Robinson Nsumba Lyazi, the assistant commissioner for comprehensive secondary education, thanked the students for their commendable efforts.
He also thanked the organisers and the teachers for promoting science education. He, however, challenged schools to adopt pro-active teaching methods to enable students apply classroom knowledge to their daily life.
Earlier, on Dr John Mbabazi, the director of education, who represented the education minister, Namirembe Bitamazire, thanked all the participants and promised continued government support for science education initiatives.
The school science quiz will be an annual event aimed at encouraging science education in schools through the participation of students and their teachers.
