THE Government has temporarily suspended aerial geophysical surveys for the discovery of minerals, following last month’s tragic plane crash at Entebbe International Airport in which two people died.

STEVEN CANDIA reports that the plane belonged to Fugro Airborne Surveys Ltd., a company contracted to carry out the surveys under the Mineral Sector Development Programme, supported by the World Bank, African Development Bank and the Nordic Development Fund.

One of the key activities under the programme is the extensive acquisition of airborne geophysical data covering large tracts of the country, which data is important for the production of detailed geological maps and infrastructure planning.

“Following this tragic accident, the government has constituted an expert panel to investigate the accident. The surveys will resume as soon as the necessary protocol and inspection have been completed,” a statement signed by Kabagambe Kaliisa, the permanent secretary ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, said.

He, however, assured all stakeholders in the mineral sector that the surveys and “other related activities of the programme shall continue to be carried out.”

Under the survey, electronic data is to be generated and analysed from seven designated blocks spread all over the country.
