CONSTRUCTION of an apron (parking space) that can accommodate about 60 planes has been completed ahead of the Commonwealth summit.

The sh4.5b apron was built by Roko Construction next to the old airport in Entebbe, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) boss, Ambrose Akandonda.

He said the apron covers a total of 60,000 square metres and it is 408 metres long and 125 metres wide.

The parking space, to be used by delegates’ planes during the summit, can accommodate planes with a weight of about 40 tonnes.

Made of concrete, it is a stone’s throw away from the VIP lounge being constructed by China Nianjing, a Chinese firm.

Akandonda said the parking space also had a taxiway that could be used by planes during arrival and departure.

He was briefing journalists after the works minister, John Nasasira, and a team from the CAA inspected the ongoing renovations at Entebbe Airport.

Nasasira said the completion of the apron had dispelled rumours that Uganda did not have space for the delegates’ planes.

Earlier, Nasasira and the CAA team inspected works on the arrival and departure lounges, the power room and newly installed sh15.8b radar and air traffic control system.

Akandonda said they were upgrading the power supply to avoid interruptions at the airport.

“We shall have two lines. One will be operational, while the other will be on stand-by so that we can switch it on in case of a problem,” he stated, adding that they also had standby generators.

The officials said the work at the airport would be completed by the end of the month.
