Luzira closes in on chess title

TABLE leaders Luzira registered a convincing victory over Mengo to tighten their grip on the 2007 National Chess League title, with one match left. Luzira whipped Mengo 4.5 points to 0.5 points, taking their tally to 47 points. They are five clear of defending champions Mulago Kings.

TABLE leaders Luzira registered a convincing victory over Mengo to tighten their grip on the 2007 National Chess League title, with one match left. Luzira whipped Mengo 4.5 points to 0.5 points, taking their tally to 47 points. They are five clear of defending champions Mulago Kings.

Luzira’s Bob Bibasa, Shadrack Kantinti and Davis Agaba beat Mengo’s Joe Kaamu, Moses Nkonge and Henry Mwaka respectively.

Luzira’s John Kikonyogo drew with Mengo’s Richard Balaza while Joan Butindo secured a fifth point for Luzira after her opponent failed to show up.

Kings who had their fixture against Kampala Club postponed to this Sunday, have a game in hand.
The game was postponed after what the Uganda Chess Federation described as ‘a mutual agreement between the two teams due to several technicalities.”

Kings have to beat Kampala Club by 5-0 to go into the closing match level with Luzira.

The last league games slated for November 18 will see Kings battle with Luzira in what is likely to be an exciting title decider.

In the other games Aviation drew with MUK 2.5-2.5 as Mulago Knights whipped Stanbic 5-0.
