EIGHTEEN years after the death of Philly Bongoley Lutaaya, Ugandan artists have paid tribute to this legend by recording renditions of his songs and compiling them into a tribute album. The album was launched at The Venue in Kampala last Thursday.

The album, now available at X-Zone International on H&B Plaza on Luwum Road, features Joe Tabula (Nfunda N’obubi), Iryn Namubiru (Empisazo), Juliana Kanyomozi (Diana), Bebe Cool (Born in Africa), Jose Chameleone (Nkooye), Mesach Ssemakula (Nakazaana), Ngoni (Nazza Gwaki), Jenkins Mukasa (Osobola Otya), Abbey Ziwa (Entebbe Wala), Eddy Yawe (Nkowoola, Tugende e’Kampala), Bobi Wine (Nazza Gwaki), Nubian Li (Empisazo), Kabuye Sembogga (Tulo Tulo) and Geoffrey Lutaaya (Tugende e’Kampala).

Radio One’s Maria Kiwanuka, who presided over the ceremony, praised the late Lutaaya for giving a face to HIV/AIDS when he declared his status in 1988 and campaigned against the epidemic.

Most of the invited artistes were present. Those who could not make it to The Venue sent representatives. Bebe Cool was represented by his wife Zuena, while Bobi Wine was represented by his manager.

Clips of Lutaaya’s documentary aired that da and provided moments of reflection. It was a re-awakening of the struggle against HIV/AIDS.

The artists will have a tribute concert, One Voice, One Goal on Sunday December 16 at Nakivubo Stadium. The concert is sponsored by MTN Uganda, USAID (through its supported projects UPHOLD, YEAH UHMG) and UNAIDS.
