Help, my periods are irregular

Dec 16, 2007

IRREGULAR periods are common at the beginning of puberty and near menopause. After puberty, a woman’s cycle should become stable though she may miss a period or two once in a while. Some people have irregular periods because they fail to ovulate (release an egg). This affects fertility.

Dear Doctor,

I am 29 years old. I have had irregular periods since I started menstruating at around 15. I always miss for about four or six months and then resume. I saw a doctor and had a scan, but no problem was identified. What is the problem? Will I be able to have children?

Dear Monic,

Your doctor may temporarily put you on the contraceptive pill so that your cycles becomes regular. There are also drugs to cause the release of eggs (ovulation) in case of pregnancy.

A gynecologist should investigate your problem and give you advice.
