THE East African federation will fight ethnicity and tribalism in the region, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera has said.

“Ethnicity will be grossly diluted by the federation of East Africa. A Kikuyu in Kenya will not be as important in East Africa as he is in Kenya. The federation will fight tribalism. Tribal biases stem largely from ignorance.”

Prof. Kagonyera was chief guest at the launch of a book on Rwanda titled: “The Politics and Empowerment of Banyarwanda Refugees in Uganda 1959-2001’at the Kampala Club last week.

The book, written by Prof. Elijah Mushemeza, a lecturer of Bishop Stuart University, was printed by Fountain Publishers.

It discusses the history of Rwandan refugees in Uganda and recommends that African governments build institutions that allow their citizens’ participation in decision making and transfer of political power to avoid violent conflicts.

The Rwandan ambassador, Kamali Karegyesa, hailed the solidarity and cordial relationship existing between Uganda and his country.

He thanked Ugandans for the hospitality extended to Rwandan refugees in the 1950’s, who had fled ethnic clashes in Rwanda.

“Ugandans helped us and up to now, we enjoy solidarity with Uganda. Even today, the link is growing stronger,” the ambassador said.

“Rwandans lived in Uganda for a long time. They were accommodated, received hospitality, educated and employed. It was difficult at some point to tell who was a refugee and who was not.”

He added that several Rwandan refugees later decided to return to their homeland.
