A veteran Ugandan journalist, Freddie Ssekitto, has authored a book about the work of retired archbishop, Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala.

The book; Cardinal Wamala’s Reflections on the Word of God, to be launched this week, chronicles Wamala’s complex journey.

Speaking to The New Vision, Ssekitto, now the information commissioner of the Kampala Archdiocese, said: “This is the pinnacle of my journalistic call as head of information in Kampala Archdiocese.

“During my tenure I have been privileged to cover the Cardinal for over five years at eucharistic celebrations and other important occasions.”

Ssekitto said the work is also a personal tribute to the Cardinal in appreciation of his service to the Archdiocese of Kampala and Uganda.

“I used my personal impressions on the texts and quotations that touched me most,” he added.

The book includes a chapter titled: ‘In His Own Words’, based on well-kept books containing Wamala’s hand-written homilies which date back to 1960s and 1970s when he was chaplain at Makerere University.

The book describes Wamala as a man who has had a dramatic impact on the Ugandan society because of his integrity, and his fight for justice which has touched people’s lives.

“Being fully convinced in the power of the word of God, he has tried to leave no stone unturned for justice in society, moral uprightness and unity and harmony among Christians,” said Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana-Luweero diocese in the preface.

In the foreword, the former Papal envoy to Uganda, Christophe Pierre, says: “In Cardinal Wamala, one senses the heart of a Pastor who has preached by word and by example. He has led people by his kindness, gentleness, humility and joyfulness.”
