Police should clamp down on these hawkers

I am concerned about the ever growing number of hawkers at Kitgum House roundabout. These people are everywhere on Yusuf Lule road, Jinja Road and even at the stretch between Mukwano roundabout and Kitgum House.

I am concerned about the ever growing number of hawkers at Kitgum House roundabout. These people are everywhere on Yusuf Lule road, Jinja Road and even at the stretch between Mukwano roundabout and Kitgum House.

These people try to sell whatever they have to passengers and motorists. The unfortunate thing is that they add to the already intolerable jam caused by vehicles.

Is it legal or safe to do business sneaking around cars in a traffic jam? Are these people real hawkers or thugs looking for an opportunity to grab people’s jewels, bags or anything else from motorists? Do they pay tax?

While I understand that everyone has a right to earn a living, must it be done against all logic and safety of both the hawkers and security of everybody else?

And as usual a bunch of traffic policemen stand around to do nothing! I bet Police will start to take strong measures against these people only when a catastrophe strikes!

This is a typical ‘fire fighting approach’ of the Uganda Police. They watch doing nothing, let the problem occur and then fly into a frenzy that lasts only a few weeks and dies out.

We need some consistency from the Police and other law enforcers, otherwise chaos will never leave our roads and cities.
