AS energy costs rise, there is need to acquire kitchen equipment that saves energy and prepares meals in a short time. This is when a pressure cooker comes in handy.

Ashish Raval of Shumuk Properties, the makers of aluminium products, says: “You can cook matooke, rice or meat in six to 10 minutes and beans in 18 minutes. Every time you prepare a meal in a pressure cooker, you save energy, time and money.”

Ashish says a pressure cooker saves about 50% energy. “If many people were using pressure cookers, they would not be spending a lot on charcoal, gas or fire wood.

Shumuk makes pressure cookers and sells them at almost half the price of other cookers on the market,” he says.

The invention of pressure cookers brought a revolution in the kitchen worldwide because of the following advantages:
It takes about 53.7 % less time.
Two or three dishes can be prepared at the same time.
It cooks food at 1210C, killing harmful germs.
A pressure cooker preserves food nutrients.
Foods rich in vitamins and proteins are preserved more when prepared in a pressure cooker because when exposed to heat, light, and air, food loses its nutrients.

When buying a pressure cooker, one should consider the following :
A stainless steel pressure cooker reduces chances of burning food. It heats faster and retains heat longer than an ordinary saucepan.

Pressure cookers vary in size and price. Their capacity ranges from three to 12litres.
