KABERAMAIDO-The Government needs to subsidise prices of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs to prevent recurrence of famine in the area, district leaders have said. Ibi Florence Ekwau, the district Woman MP, told visiting legislators on the parliamentary committee of agriculture at Ochero sub-county on Wednesday that the move would enable households boost agricultural production and maximise yields from the limited land.

Tonnes of expired drugs confiscated
TORORO-Over 1,000kg of expired drugs have been confiscated from pharmacies and drug shops in the eastern region. The drugs included anti-malarias, antibiotics, syrup and injectables.
National Drug Authority officer in charge of the eastern region Stephen Lutoti said on Friday the owners of the drug shops had been arrested. “Unfortunately, most of the suspects are now out on bail,” said Lutoti.

NAADS gives sh80m for birds
SOROTI-The National Agricultural Advisory Services programme has provided sh80m in special support to poultry projects managed by the youth in the district. The district’s programme coordinator, Charles Aben, announced this during a tour of the projects. Aben noted that the project would avail another 6,800 layers to the youth, adding that 40 bags of chicken feed and drugs had already been delivered to the different groups. The programme was started in February.

Kadaga calls for HIV support
JINJA-Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has asked NGOs to initiate more income-generating activities for their clients. Kadaga made the plea at the handover of heifers, bicycles, blankets and mosquito nets to women living with HIV/AIDS, orphans and the elderly supported by Kagoma Orphans and Health Care, a community-based organisation.
