THE LC3 chairman of Dabani sub-county in Busia district, John Egessa Waata, has been shot dead. Busia district police commander Nasur Oringa said the murder happened on Saturday at 7:45pm, in Dabani trading centre.

He said the unidentified assailants shot Waata through the chest. The thugs attacked and robbed two shops where Egessa Waata was having a social evening.

Oringa identified the owners of the shops as Teopista Were and Enock Mangeni, who were robbed of mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

The motive of the murder has not been established as investigations are still going on. Oringa urged the public to be calm and give information that could lead to the arrest of the killers.

The killing of Egessa Waata follows a series of armed robberies in the district. Family sources reported that three men had earlier gone to Egessa Waata’s home looking for him.

“We told them the chairman was not around. They rode away jeering,” said a family member. Mangeni said after the shooting, one of the attackers flashed a torch at the body before walking away.

Neighbours complained that although the shooting occurred 100metres away from the Police post, officers took a long time to respond. They blamed the Police for failing to contain the insecurity in the area.

Waata’s body was taken to Tanaka hospital mortuary in Busia, Kenya.
