KITGUM and Pader town councils have received underground water projects worth $3m (about 60b) to supply 70,000 people.

The projects were funded by USAID through the Northern Uganda Transition Initiative to provide about 249,000 cubic litres of clean water to the towns.

The project that took three months to complete, was commissioned last Wednesday by the USAID country director, Dave Eckerson, at Kitgum Technical Institute.

Kitgum Resident District Commissioner Omony Ogaba said the construction work was done by WASH Csonsult Company, which will also collect revenue from the water for the town council.

Omony said with the availability of clean water, they would be able to fight Hepatitis E and other diseases which are transmitted through contaminated food and water.

A Hepatitis E epedemic recently hit Kitgum due to unsafe water sources.

Kitgum mayor Richard Okwera said the town suffers a low supply of water through the generator-powered system whenever there was no electricity.

Eckerson said USAID would provide more resources to expand the water reservoir tanks for Kitgum.
