FOUR policemen have been arrested in connection with torturing a suspect who was found dead in a Police cell in Mukono district on Sunday.

Ali Katende, a resident of Bubiro village, was found dead at Nakifuma Police post three days after he had been arrested for allegedly obstructing justice.

Katende’s body had wounds on the hands and buttocks.

The Central Regional Police Spokesman, Lameck Kigozi, identified the policemen as Police Constables Joash Kiirya, Samuel Ejoku, Samuel Ociti and Special Police Constable James Wagenda.

Kigozi said trouble started on August 24, when the policemen were deployed to arrest Benjamin Tamale, a resident of Bubiro village.

He explained that Tamale had allegedly assaulted a fish monger, Rogers Nviiri.

The mission to arrest Tamale failed after the policemen were obstructed by a mob and they instead arrested Katende and locked him up, Kigozi added.
