THE Police in Mukono town fought running battles with the youth who blocked roads leading to and out of the town.

The Mukono-Kayunga road that leads to Bugerere was blocked with a big tree stem that the Police officers struggled to pull out, in vain.

The town had remained calm at the time violence broke out in Kampala, about 20km away.

However, at around 3:00pm, the youth set fire in the middle of the roads, pelted the Police with stones and the officers fired back with teargases and live bullets.

A fire brigade van, which was called to put out the fire, run out of fuel after turning off to Kayunga road from the Kampala-Jinja highway.

Students and pupils who were leaving schools in the evening became victims of the riot.

Earlier, traditional healers led by their chairman, Salongo Bukhe Kiggo, met at the Mukono district community hall to find ways of enabling the Kabaka to go to Kayunga.
