MINISTERS from the five East African Community (EAC) states will this month discuss the common market protocol, officials have said.
The meeting, to be held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, will run from September 24 to 25.
According to Edith Mwanje, the permanent secretary at EAC affairs ministry, the ministers will discuss how member states can take advantage of the protocol once it comes into effect next year.
They will also review the free movement of persons, workers, and rights of establishment and residence, Mwanje told journalists in Kampala yesterday.
Other issues to be discussed are the free movement of capital, harmonisation and recognition of academic and professional qualifications, permanent residence and protection of cross-border investment.
A common market is a single economic space that enables businesses to stimulate productivity, domestic and foreign investment.
Heads of state are expected to sign the protocol at the 11th summit to be held in Arusha in November. The protocol is expected to be operational in January 2010.
Mwanje said membership to other regional economic groups would not stall the common market.
