KAMPALA city schools have received books to facilitate the development of a reading culture among school children.

The Kampala City Council minister for education and sports, Doreen Nsamba Naakatya, received the donation worth sh5m from Fountain Publishers during the launch of a children’s reading tent.

The three-day National Book-Week Festival event was held at the Railways grounds in Kampala last week.

“We should not only focus on passing exams but also develop other skills like reading, which is important,” said Naakatya.

Commenting on the theme of the event, “A reading parent a reading child”, Naakatya advised teachers to collaborate with parents to improve children’s reading skills.

The donation contained five cartons of books for children in primary One to Four. Naakatya said the books would be distributed among the five city divisions.

The event had 17 publishers and booksellers from Uganda, four from Tanzania and three from Kenya. Several district public libraries also participated in the activitiesgeared towards improving the reading culture.
