Her First Job
OPRAH'S first job was as a newsreader at WVOL 1470 radio in her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. She was 17 years and still in high school when she got the job, by accident.

Oprah had gone to the radio station to pick up a prize she had won for winning a beauty contest representing the radio. She was offered the chance to read news copy and hear what her voice sounded like on tape.

Executives at the station were so impressed by how cleanly and clearly she had read the copy that they decided to hire her to read news on air as a part timer after school and weekends, while she studied.
