OVER 200,000 people are set to acquire modern houses under the slum upgrading programme in the country.
Actogether operations coordinator Muhammed Lutwama said the project will benefit slum dwellers in five municipalities in Jinja, Mbale, Arua, Mbarara and Kabale districts.

Lutwama said the project is being funded by the Government and development partners. He disclosed that the programme would take three years, but is subject to extension for continued improvement of access to social services.

Lutwama recently made the remarks at the Regional Savers Meeting for Kawempe Regional Slum Dwellers in Kalerwe, Kawempe Division.

Actogether is a local non- governmental organisation affiliated to Slum Dwellers Federation of Uganda.

The organisation’s aim is to get rid of slums in the cities through developing strategies that benefit the most vulnerable people.

Actogether is currently working with over 6,500 slum dwellers in Kawempe, Kampala Central Division and Mpumudde in Jinja.

Lutwama said the organisation supports communities to advocate for their rights and acquire adequate housing and secure land tenure.

Members are also encouraged to save according to each one’s ability in their struggle to achieve better facilities.

Kawempe Division secretary for production and marketing Charles Sserumaga welcomed the project, saying it would benefit all the vulnerable people. “This is a universal project which you, slum dwellers, must not politicise.”
