EAST African Breweries (EABL) has terminated sponsorship for their branded Tusker Safari Sevens, the region’s biggest rugby tournament.

The move came weeks after the beer company also ended their sponsorship of the Elgon Cup that pits Kenya and Uganda 15-a-side teams.

The Tusker 7s sponsorship this year was Ksh26m (sh650m) while the Elgon Cup was Ksh4m (sh100m). Tusker had a 13-year partnership with Safari Sevens, dating back to 1997 when the company pegged it to its brand, Tusker.

The annual event grew in stature with Uganda Rugby Cranes becoming regular participants. The event has also attracted world beaters Fiji, Samoa, Emerging Boks of South Africa, British Army and Bristol University.

Kenya union boss, Richard Omwela said they have no option but to look for new sponsors. Kenya won this year’s edition.
