BRIAN Suuna and Abraham Wogute will renew their badminton rivalry when they meet in the inaugural Tembo Steels Open that starts on Friday at Sharing Youth Centre.

The duo have battled against each other in all local tournaments this season, with top seed Suuna taking the honours. An increase in prize money this weekend will fuel their rivalry.

Tembo Steels yesterday unveiled a sh8m sponsorship of the three-day event, the second biggest on the badminton calendar, with a cash prize of sh2m. The richest event is the sh20m Roofings International tournament.

“Badminton is not the most popular sport in Uganda but we wanted to identify with its gradual development. We commit ourselves to developing youth talent,” said the company’s chief executive Rajesh Nair before handing over a cheque to badminton association chairman William Tumwine.

Event coordinator Simon Mugabi said that the money will go towards logistics for over 300 players.
