I missed my periods; could I be pregnant?

Oct 25, 2009

THE only way you can know if you are pregnant or not is by visiting a doctor and having some tests done. The urine pregnancy test kit is also available in most pharmacies.

Dear Doctor,
I recently got cramps about the time I was supposed to get my periods which did not come. Earlier on, I was suffering from anxiety and the doctor gave me a prescription and I became better. Does it mean I am pregnant?

Dear Carl,

It is not clear whether you wanted to become pregnant or it is likely to be an unplanned event. In either case you need to know the truth and accept it.

However, missing a period is not proof of pregnancy. There are a number of things that can interfere with the normal physiology of the body leading to a delay in or missed period.

This includes stress, illness and changes in weight. A change in ones environment may also cause a change in their cycle. It is also common for women to have a slight irregularity in their cycle during their early reproductive years.

Anxiety can also cause irregular periods. You need to relax and identify the source of your anxiety so that it can be dealt with. The fact that you are worried about being pregnant implies that you are sexually active.

You need to be concerned about the other risks involved in having unprotected sex, including STDs.
