ANDREW Sorowen, the Kampala Metropolitan boss, has asked the Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA) to desist from any acts of indiscipline, reports Andante Okanya.

He cited thefts, failure to obey road traffic rules, and hygiene as some of the acts of indiscipline that were spoiling the name of UTODA.

Sorowen asked the UTODA managers to do background checks on drivers and conductors before they are allowed to operate.

“The Police will clamp down on indiscipline. You must weed out those spoiling your name,”Sorowen advised.

He was on Thursday closing a road safety workshop for UTODA organised by Toyota Uganda, in partnership with Arrive Alive Uganda, at the Nsambya Youth Sharing Centre in Kampala.

Sorowen added that the blame game between the Police and the association over who has wronged the other must stop because the two needed each other to streamline the management of public transport in the city.

He warned drivers against driving when they have domestic problems at home, advising that they should instead stay home because they could fail to concentrate, which is a recipe for road accidents

He noted that the human rights reports were usually unfair to the Police yet as a security force, they must assert their authority.

Sorowen said although the international law calls for reasonable force, there is no measurement to determine it since different situations call for different amounts of force.

He, however, commended UTODA for securing the taxi parks and guarding property from rioters whenever the city is engulfed in chaos.
