ON the face of it, they are just an opportunity for students to come out and make merry with performances from big musical stars in the backyards of their university campuses.

But, at the core of these activations is a strategy to bring the brand closer to the young people. Such was the MTN Late Chat party at Nkozi University last Friday evening.

On the one hand, you had Gasper Mbowa, the MTN segment manager, youth, telling the students about the irresistible advantages they would enjoy if they hooked onto the new MTN Late Chat tariff.

On offer that evening was the state-of-the-art Nokia 2330 phones with their free Ovi email setup in which they could get 5MB for free upon activating and bonus sms on loading, SMS @ 35/- sms and surfing for 1/- per Kb.

Then there were the prizes. By sending the phrase “Late Chat”. The Students, who gathered in the parking yard of Bbosa Hostel for the activation that evening, entered a draw to win either a home theatre system or a 21-Inch LG flatron TV.

At the end of it all, Sarah Apollo, a first year student, won the home theatre while Lawrence Gwinyaai, a third year student, won the TV. But for most of the students, the real fun lay in the music stars! Soon, MC Kats, emcee for the evening, brought on little known rapper Gramm Disaster, who opened the show a little after 9:00pm.

New Style Dancers, a new dance act, thrilled the students with their fancy foot work but it was Navio, who got the party started in earnest, sending especially the female students into a feverish frenzy when he stepped on stage.

Blu3’s performance was no less exciting as was K.S Alpha and rapper Ruba Duba. Bebe Cool totally rocked the crowd with his Agenze, Kube, Bamugambe and Bogolako hits.

GNL performed last and was thrilling. When the show ended, close to 1:00am, the incredulous students were not keen on leaving the venue as they continued dancing.
