Kilembe Copper Smelter Ltd-Jinja is to start buying copper ore from local suppliers, Kenneth Akandwanaho, the acting managing director, has said. In an interview with The New Vision, Akandwanaho said the company, which started copper smelting early this year, would buy all the copper ore, especially oxydic ore, on the market.

“Some people with mines have contacted us and we are prepared to take all the copper ore they can produce,” he said. He said the firm currently processes about 10 tonnes of copper ore daily, but could process more if there were enough supplies.

Interested suppliers should be able to take samples of their copper ore for a test at the Kilembe Jinja plant. The sample should not be less than 150 kilogrammes.

“Terms of payment and delivery will be discussed only after first test smelting of sample,” Akandwanaho said.“For further deliveries’ payment will be done immediately after smelting. Prepare photographs of your mine and analysis, if available.

“We want them to also submit as much data as possible.” Suppliers from outside Uganda must provide customs documents. The firm does not buy scrap.

Uganda’s biggest copper mine, Kilembe Copper Mines, has not been operational for decades. It collapsed when world copper prices declined sharply.
