THE national soccer team Cranes might be financially handicapped, but could recoup whatever money is invested in them at the CECAFA Orange Senior Challenge Cup.

Winners will walk off with a $30,000 (sh55m) purse, with the first and second runner up collecting $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.

“We received a communication about the prize money and they have also told us that they will cater for our internal transport and accommodation,” said FUFA CEO Edgar Watson. He however said they were yet to get the funds for the team to make the trip.

Last week, FUFA said they need sh54m in support for the trip. Players are already in residential training for the tournament.

And CECAFA is confident that the absence of Sudan will not be felt owing to the quality of teams in attendance.

General secretary Nicholas Musonye said they excluded Sudan after they failed to beat the deadline.

Sudan, three times winners, have not given the reason for their withdrawal but sources in Khartoum revealed that the team was demoralised after failing to qualify for the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, Cranes midfielder Steven Bengo maintains that the fitness regime he is undergoing will rehabilitate him into one of the central figures for the tournament.

The former SC Villa player has been depressed by criticism recently about his overall fitness.

However with just five days left to the event in Kenya, the midfielder has promised to respond in the only way he knows how.

“I have worked on so many things and I feel better. I am doing extremely well. There are no problems now,” Bengo stated.

Sports State minister Charles Bakkabulindi and FUFA boss Lawrence Mulindwa visited the team, promising full support in their quest for a record 11th title.
