What family planning method suits us?
Dear Dr, I am 20, a first year university student. My boyfriend and I are HIV negative. I was not sure about my boyfriend, so I suggested using a condom, or diaphragm, or a spermicide but he refused. We got Postinor 2 tablets to take immediately after sex. But now, we are worried. Won’t it affect a pregnancy negatively? What should we use?
Khadija

Dear Khadija,
Do you want to prevent pregnancy or HIV? Only the condom, of the family planning methods, will prevent HIV and pregnancy. The others do not prevent HIV.

There are very many methods of family planning, including pills, condoms, diaphragm, injections, and inserts. They work in different ways and have different side effects. Before you start, it is important to talk to a family planning counsellor and choose the best method for you.

Postinor 2 is the ‘morning-after-pill’. It is only for emergencies when your usual family planning method fails. It should not be used every time after sex.

See a family planning counsellor with your boyfriend. choose a method which suits you.
