Museveni deserves the doctorate

EDITOR—I have read a number of reactions to the proposal to honour President Museveni with a law doctorate from Makerere University for his contribution in agriculture.

Please note that the doctorate is in agriculture and not law or education. I would be bewildered if he was acknowledged for nurturing rule of law and constitutionalism. I am an avid critic of Museveni' but credit should be given where it is due.

Uganda’s strides in agriculture are commendable and it is fitting that the highest brains at Makerere saw it fit to recognise him. Some elements within our society have tried to make comparisons with Idi Amin’s ‘doctorate’!

That is far-fetched first because Amin’s education level was limited to the Koran instruction yet Museveni is a university graduate. Secondly, Museveni did not compel Makerere to award him the honour as Amin did. Sometimes politics should never surface in some issues.

While I may not totally agree with Museveni on many issues, including the funding of Makerere, i find it irrational to contest the proposal to honour him.

I think this recognition was long overdue. The dons in political science should also honour him for professionalising the army.
