PRAYER must be accompanied with hard work for it to be effective, President Yoweri Museveni told born-again Christians on New Year’s Eve.
Accompanied by First Lady Janet Museveni, the President told the faithful at Kololo national ceremonial grounds that even Manna does not drop from heaven everyday.
"We have a saying in Luganda that ‘Lubaale mbeera, nga n'embiro kwotadde' meaning, God helps those who help themselves. This year if you only pray and don't add on embiro (haste), God will just ignore you," he said.
Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga of Christian Life Church organised the overnight prayers which are held annually to thank God for the previous year, and to pray for a prosperous new one.
"Even Jesus Christ was in the desert for 40 days before God brought him Manna. You don't just sit and think food will come from heaven," Museveni stressed.
He said when Jesus was a boy, he helped his father in the carpentry. “Even Paul in his letters tells us to work. Therefore every religion; born again, Catholics, Muslims and all who accept the gospel must see that you work." The President appealed to Christians not to despise any form of work because Jesus never did.
"He (Jesus) preached to and healed the leper, prostitute, and the haemorrhagic. He did any work, never despised anybody. Mary was not wife to a professor, but a carpenter. Jesus was born in a manger, not in Sheraton," Museveni said.
He said despising work causes poverty. and not wanting to 'touch soil', people bring poverty on themselves. "What if God wants to enrich you through the soil? You cannot sit there and say, 'God help us in our idleness. Unless He has got some other purpose to prove something, he will ignore you," Museveni said.
The President thanked the congregation, of mainly young people, for thirsting for the Gospel instead of beer. He asked the born-again to spearhead the campaign of keeping Kampala clean of dirt, buveera, banana peelings, sugarcane husks and litter.
