Get the best out of your fridge

LIKE sofas, fridges are very important gadgets in one’s home. They help preserve perishable foods and cool water. However, fridges fall prey to precarious situation like rusting. One therefore needs to clean the fridge daily.

LIKE sofas, fridges are very important gadgets in one’s home. They help preserve perishable foods and cool water. However, fridges fall prey to precarious situation like rusting. One therefore needs to clean the fridge daily.

Saaka Bulega, a fridge technician at Multi-Electronics Service Centre on Kampala Road says rusting of fridges around the door is caused by the water dripping from the freezer. He remarks that the dripping water with the emission of oxygen gas in the fridge favours rusting.

“One should always wipe water out of a fridge using a clean cloth”, advises Bulega.

According to www.fridgeandfreezercare.htm, one should use these tips to ensure the general cleanliness of the fridge:

-Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Position the fridge away from any source of heat such as a radiator or sunshine.
- Use a fridge thermometer and ensure that the temperature of food is kept below eight degrees centigrade.

- A crowded fridge is not as efficient as one that allows free air circulation.
- Dry foods should he kept at the top apartment inside the fridge not in the freezer.

- Wet foods such as raw meat should be kept at the bottom of the apartment inside the fridge.
- Do not leave the fridge door open for long.

- Clean the door seals with a solution of detergent to remove mould growth.
- Allow air to circulate around the outside of the fridge.
- Adjust the internal dial at different times of the year in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer.

It is also important to be acquainted with the following tips regarding freezers:
- Read freezer manufacturers instructions.
- Read instructions of food packaging.

- Keep the temperature of the freezer between negative 18 and 22 degrees centigrade.
- Label all food packaging and containers with date of cooking and use by date.

- Use proper freezer storage equipment.
- Do not use cardboard packaging or newspaper.
- A well-stocked freezer is more energy efficient.

- Do not allow ice build up inside the freezer.
- Defrost the freezer in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
- Keep freezers away from sources of heat.

- Allow air to circulate around the out side of the freezer.
- Keep the door seal of the freezer clean and disinfected.
- In the event of power failure, keep freezer door shut.
- If the power failure persists for more than eight hours, get rid of the food in your fridge.
