LIFESKILLS

IT is a new year; a time to make a fresh start. Things might not have worked well last year but this year is different. It has offered you a fresh slate on which you can write afresh. You can use the past failures to lay a foundation for your success.

It is time to deal with the weaknesses that held you back from achieving your academic dreams last year. Is it a problem with certain subjects?

Have you failed to manage your time well or do you spend more time having fun with friends? Do you begin revision late and fail to prepare yourself for exams in time?

Beginning of a new year gives you an opportunity to discover yourself afresh and set new goals. Here are tips to help you make resolutions and lay strategies:
l Bear in mind that falling in itself is not a mistake but remaining down is. Do not dwell on your past failures, learn from them and move on.

l Identify the area which needs to be worked on. You cannot find a solution for a problem you haven’t defined. Do not just say, ‘I have a problem with Mathematics.’ Make it more specific like ‘I fear the Mathematics teacher’ or ‘I do not revise Mathematics enough.’

l Lay down strategies to help you overcome the problem. Begin with preparing a personal time table that will guide your activities each day.

l Ensure that your strategies are clearly written down in your notebook. If it is a big task, break it into small achievable portions.

l Follow your resolutions up to the end of the year. You also need to evaluate yourself regularly. Ask yourself how much you have achieved at the end of the week or month.
