MAKERERE University is to teach more local languages including Lusoga-Lugweri-Lukenyi, the vice-chancellor, Prof. Livingstone Luboobi, has said.

The other languages to be taught at the Institute of Languages are Lumasaba-Lusamia-Lunyoli, Ateso-Karimojong and Lugbarati-Madi.
Luboobi made the revelations at the graduation of over 900 students from the Faculty of Arts yesterday.
Currently the languages taught are Runyakitara, Luganda, Swahili, English, German and French.

The best graduand, Annet Nakawooya, was also recognised. The Bachelor of Arts in Drama student received the university’s convocation award of sh500,000 and a plaque, amid drumming and chanting from students of music and drama.

Other students who excelled were Clare Kagga (secretarial studies), Joseph Wasswa (music), Bonny Apunyu (mass communication), Ladslaus Matthew (tourism), Godfred Rovakuma (urban planning) and Julie Ssesanga (music, dance and drama).
Also recognised were Zadok Adolu Otojoka, 73, of the MDD department and I. Mutekanga, composers of the university anthem.

Luboobi listed the other initiatives of the Faculty of Arts as development of new courses like the Bachelors in Ethics and Public Management and Masters in Applied Ethics. The two programmes are aimed at strengthening ethics in corporate management, Luboobi said.

The philosophy department, he said, had also launched a summer school with the University of Zurich, focusing on world poverty and human rights.

The chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, warned the university against harbouring wrangles. “They should be no disputes in Makerere.”

Kagonyera said if Makerere is to remain the most prestigious university in Uganda, there was need to improve the areas that haunt it.
