The Chief of the Defence Forces, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, has warned the LRA rebels that they will be pursued if they do not sign the Juba peace agreement.

“If Kony pulls out of the talks and tries to come back to Uganda, we shall follow him up to his hideouts, because he seems to have lost his senses to the extent of killing his deputy, Vincent Otti,” Nyakairima said.

“We will be ready to see Kony, this time not with cheques and dollars, but with guns.”

The army chief was recently briefing the Hoima LC5 executive on security issues.

Aronda, together with ministers Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, Matia Kasaija, Matsiko Kabakumba, Atwoki Kasirivu and Salim Saleh were in the region to participate in the army week activities ahead of the Tarehe Sita celebrations in Masindi district on Wednesday.

Nyakairima said Uganda would team up with the Government of South Sudan, DR Congo and the UN Mission in DR Congo (MONUC) and take action against Kony if he refuses to cooperate.

He assured the country that the army had the capacity to deal with the rebels if they re-launched an attack.

Majority of the people in the North, he added, had returned to their homes. Roads have reopened in the Karamoja region since the raids declined.

“We declared 2008 a year of bringing sanity back to Karamoja and preventing further attacks on their neighbours.”

Nyakairima said the army was making progress in disarming the Karimojong warriors.

“We told the warriors not to cross to surrounding districts with guns.”

He revealed that the army was monitoring demonstrations in Kampala, saying they had become a threat to national security.
