They still hang out together

THE women of yesteryear must be cursing as to why they were born in the ‘wrong era’. The era of the man’s world when it was almost a taboo for a man to be seen hanging out with his woman, but in the women’s eyes not a taboo for a woman to be seen hanging out with her man.

Women want to hang out with their men. Some men want to hang out with their women but can’t because of the teasing from other men that they are ‘henpecked’, while other men just believe it is not the done thing.

But today, things are changing. Couples hang out and not just as a one off when they are invited to weddings or graduations but hang out for real. They make appointments to meet after work and go for drinks or a meal. If not it is to Cineplex and on the rare occasion to Alleygators.

But with Valentines coming up next Thursday, is it right for a couple who never go out together to suddenly make the effort to be seen together? Is love all about one day?

Regardless of Valentine’s Day, John and Fiona Ejalu always hang out together.

When they are out, they sit together, talk to each other, use one car and more importantly go home together. Some say it is because he has European exposure and she too is a European and does not ‘stand for the Ugandan mentality of not being seen out with her man.’

Far from that. They are from the new school, the new school whose doctrine does not read ‘don’t hang out together’.

But there is one man who defies the odds despite his rank of Lt. Gen. and his job title of deputy chief of defence Forces. He is none other than Ivan Koreta. Whenever he is not bogged down with state duties, Koreta is always seen in the company of his wife Agnes (in picture). He takes her out to dinner – to Fang Fang in Nakasero and to Uganda Golf Club among, other places.

And when they are together, he always makes it a point to open the car door for her even though he has an aide at his beck and call to do such trivial things. But to Koreta, opening the car door for Agnes is not trivial. It is what is expected of him as a gentleman and he does not care what people say.

Before they left Uganda for Europe, former head of the European Delegation to Uganda, Sigrud Illing and his companion, Dorcas were out in the open showing their love, despite what they went through (the wagging tongues about their relationship). To every function he was invited to attend, she was always by his side.

Other couples that always hang out together are Martin and Camille Aliker, Angela and Fred Kivulu, Morine and Gordon Wavamunno and Jyostna and Sudhir Ruparelia.
