FOR the UB40’s maiden show, revellers thronged Lugogo Cricket Oval as early as 4:00pm for the 9:00pm show and by 7:00pm, the place was almost full.
Thanks to the organisers, there were no curtain raisers to mess up the event’s timing. Ululation reigned through the oval when UB40 hit the stage at 9.30pm.

Dancing crowds waved yellow souvenir bandanas and others the Uganda flag. Punctuations of “Hello Uganda, Kampala,” from Robin and Ali Campbell raised the mood.

Receiving raucous welcomes were tunes such as Cherry Oh Baby, Homely Girl, Here I am (come and take me), Stick by Me, Kingston Town and Red Red Wine. While Can’t Help Falling in Love played, people passionately waved their hands in the air, feeling lovely.

There was ample security and good organisation throughout the event although darkness at the entrance of the sh25,000 ticket holders provided ground for pick pocketing temptations.

Some VIPs (sh120,000), missed out on seats and had to watch while standing, but who cares, concerts are best watched standing and dancing.
The Platinum section for the sh300,000 tickets lived up to expectation with everything in high gear.

Food and drinks were aplenty and the service was courteous. High up and secluded from the majority, this Oasis section, with ample vision and decorated in MTN’s characteristic yellow, was the place to be. Quiet and serene, it provided the ambiance expected from the sh300,000.

The sound, stage and lights were up to standard, but fireworks at 11.15pm signaled the end of the two- our long concert. Most revellers thought UB40 was taking a break and would be back soon.

At 11.30, many anxiously waited the band’s second coming, but others sensed the signs and walked away. Even at midnight, some thought some miracle would bring the band back, but that was just it, the show had ended unannounced or was it announced differently through a fireworks display.

Most people could have left distraught for the band not playing some favourites such as Reasons, Many Rivers and I Got You Baby . Nevertheless, it was a fantastic show.
