LIRA Hospital disposes of clinical in a pit, MPs heard yesterday. The hospital superintendent, Jane Aceng, said the facility, which was built in the 1920s, lacked an incinerator.

“It is unprofessional to burn body parts and other hospital waste in a pit but we have nothing to do. We have no money,” she told the public accounts committee chaired by Nandala Mafabi (FDC).

She said due to the poor state of the hospital, people always break into the facility and steal beds and mattresses.
Aceng said although the theatre equipment was still functional, most of the parts were old and often breaks down.

Aceng was appearing before the committee to answer queries raised in the Auditor General’s report for the financial year 2005/2006.

The Auditor General’s report noted that there was need to renovate and expand the theatre and staff houses.
