THE National Forestry Authority (NFA) has signed a 10-year forest management contract with the Buzenga Environmental Conservation Association in Bushenyi.

Under the agreement signed at Kasyoha-Kitomi central forest reserve, the association will support NFA’s efforts of protecting the forest reserve from encroachment and other illegal activities.

“We shall work closely with the community to conserve the forest. We don’t expect any tensions with the local community arising from encroachment and illegal activity,” said Damian Akankwasa, the NFA executive director.

NFA promised to improve livelihoods of the community by granting them concessions to carry out non-destructive income-generating activities like bee-keeping, tree-planting and regulated firewood harvesting in the forest.

Longino Ndyanabo, the Bushenyi district chairperson, called upon the people to plant trees as a long-term investment.

“Planting trees is not the sole responsibility of the NFA. You should also plant trees on some of these bare hills because you can make great earnings from products like timber.”
