FRANK Mugisa fired a closing round 71 to win the Crane Bank Kigezi golf Open yesterday. The scratch player from Fort Portal, edged homeboy Brian Mwesigwa by one stroke in the amateurs event at Kabale sports club.

The 36-hole competition that set in motion this year’s Uganda Golf Union (UGU) calendar attracted over 50 players.
Mugisa rose from second position on day one to claim the top prize. The winner carded 72 behind the day one leader Mwesigwa who fired 69 on the undulating course.

But Mugisa and his rivals had to contend with chilly conditions in the final round following early morning rain.

Mugisa’s battle with Mwesigwa continued in the last 18 round and after the first 9 holes, the two men were level.
Mugisa sunk birdies on number one, two, seven and nine. The champion stepped up gear on the second nine before finishing his round with a par to edge Mwesigwa by one stroke.

A delighted Mugisa made up for the defeat against Entebbe rival Dickson Lagoro in 2006. Lagoro later joined the professional ranks.

The success earned Mugisa his third union title after the Shell Open and Mbarara Open wins in 2006.

In the professionals category, Deo Akope, Godfrey Mande, Herman Mutawe shared the top prize after drawing level in the play-off. The professionals had tied at 143 strokes after 36 holes.

The competition set the stage for over 15 other union events to be held all year round.
