CAREER GUIDANCE

Dear Jamesa,
I am taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology at A’Level and subsidiary Mathematics. We do not have career guidance at our school. My parents cannot help me either. I am torn between Pharmacy and Medicine. How are these two programmes related? Is Pharmacy better than Medicine? Please advise me.
Dan

Dear Dan,
Although the study of Pharmacy involves some basic training in the effects of drugs on the human body, a pharmacist is not a medical doctor. However, there are some course units that both students of Pharmacy and Medicine take.

There are diverse career opportunities for graduate pharmacists. Some Pharmacy graduates get jobs as pharmacists in government hospitals, consultants to drug companies, pharmacists in drug shops. Others open private pharmacies.

Pharmacy is not better than Medicine. It is one of the branches of Human Medicine that you can choose to specialise in.

Other branches of Medicine are:
l Dental Surgery: It gives you the skills to carry out delicate operation on the tooth. Many dental surgeons work as consultants in both government and private hospitals.

- Environmental Health Science: This utilises the concepts of natural science and mathematics, effective public health management skills to identify and control disease agents. Graduates are trained to guard the health standards of the community. There are career opportunities for environmental health science graduates in the public and private sector.

- Medical Radiography: This involves diagnosis and treatment of diseases by use of X-ray. Many of the graduates get jobs in government hospitals. Some get jobs with international research bodies.

- Nursing: Many nurses work in government and private hospitals, clinics, schools and non-government health-based organisations.

Makerere University offers:
- Bachelor of Surgery
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Bachelor of Pharmacy
- Bachelor of Environmental Health Science
- Bachelor of Science in Medical Radiography

Mbarara University of Science and Technology offers Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Science in addition to some of the above programmes.

Gulu University also offers Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Requirements:
The are three core subjects: Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Other important subjects are Physics, Economics and Agriculture.
