THE Democratic Party (DP) candidate in the just concluded Bukomansimbi by-election, Deogratius Kiyingi, has conceded defeat.

“Although the elections were full of irregularities, I’ll not challenge the results on any grounds, not even the winner’s academic papers,” Kiyingi told journalists at Agripa Hotel in Masaka town on Saturday.

Kiyingi, who polled 12, 363 votes, lost to Iddi Kisiki Lubyayi of the NRM, who got 15, 020 votes.

The by-election was ordered after court ruled that Lubyayi lacked the necessary academic qualifications.

Kiyingi said the period to the next elections was too short to lodge a petition. The next elections are slated for 2011.

“I am now preparing myself for the next elections. I have to be with the people who voted for me till then.”

Kiyingi, who was flanked by DP supporters from Kampala and Masaka, attributed his loss to the State’s machinery, which he claimed backed Lubyayi.

“I have no problem with the President, ministers and NRM MPs coming to Bukomansimbi to campaign for Lubyayi. My complaint is about using state resources and bribing voters with huge sums of cash.”

Kiyingi also attacked the electoral commission for ‘turning a deaf ear when Lubyayi’s agents escorted voters to basins to ensure that they ticked their candidate.’

“For now, I will deliver everything I promised to the people of Bukomansimbi although am not in the House,” he added.

“I will bring mobile clinics and donors to help the constituency.”
