FOUR candidates have been nominated to contest for the Buikwe South parliamentary seat. Ibrahim Kakembo, the returning officer for Mukono district, on Wednesday said the candidates are Anthony Mukasa (NRM) and Lulume Bayiga (Democratic Party).

The independents are Allan Gitta and Abdallah Kimbowa. He added that the nominations were peaceful.

The Forum for Democratic Change and the Uganda People’s Congress did not field candidates.

The seat fell vacant when the Supreme Court nullified Mukasa’s election on grounds that he bribed voters.

The Electoral Commission has set April 30 as the polling day. Sub-county women councillors for Koome, Ssi and Ngogwe will also be elected on the same day.

Councillors for people with disabilities for the three sub-counties will be elected on April 22.

Elections for the councillor for Koome will also be conducted on April 30.
Mukasa vowed to retain his seat.
Bayiga said he was representing ‘the face of the opposition’.

“Buikwe South has very bad roads and it takes ages to get students passing in first grade. This is my chance to change this mess.”
