EDITOR—On Thursday you published a story entitled “Makerere University bursar resigns”. The story, quoting an anonymous source, says that the bursar, Mr. Ben Byambabazi, had written to the vice chancellor informing him that he would not wait for his contract to expire next year.

It is true the bursar earlier wrote to the vice chancellor indicating that he is due to retire since he would soon turn 60.

However, it is not true that he has resigned. No official communication to that effect has been received anywhere. He continues to serve in his current capacity and there are no preparations ‘for a handover on Friday’. It is also wrong to say that the bursar is on contract since he is a full-time employee of the university.

What Byambabazi said in his letter is that he should not be considered for employment on contract when he retires.

It is normal practice within the civil service for officers who have reached retirement age to be retained on contract if their services are still required.
