FR. John Mary Waliggo was a true friend, a National Resistance Movement supporter, a grate academician and an accomplished writer. This was in a condolence message read for President Yoweri Museveni by the Minister for the Presidency, Beatrice Wabudeya, at requiem mass at Rubaga Cathedral yesterday.
The mass, celebrated by Kampala Archbishop, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, was attended by several ministers, MPs, Government officials and friends. The President also contributed sh2m for Waliggo’s burial today at Bukalasa Cemetery in Masaka Diocese.
Museveni said Waliggo was dedicated, diligent and deserved recognition for services he rendered to the nation.
Waliggo died on April 19, aboard a South African Airways flight enroute to Entebbe. He had cancer of the stomach and had just been treated in South Africa.
“Documents from the South African hospital said Waliggo developed a blood clot in the vein,†Fr. Anthony Zachary Rweza, a family member, said. Museveni said Waliggo fought for the vulnerable, oppressed, prisoners, widows and orphans.
“His death is a great loss to the Catholic Church in Uganda and Africa,†Museveni added.
The Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, proposed that Waliggo be honoured for his selfless service.
“He left a legacy that justifies recognition. Waliggo was a secretary to the Constitutional Commission in 1990 where I was the chairman. He was balanced and I used to call him the ‘fire brigade’ of the commission,†Odoki added.
Odoki also described Waliggo as a humble, likable and highly principled person.
The chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Margaret Ssekagya, said they would print the works he left unpublished.
The vice-chairperson of the Media Council, Dr. Gorreti Nassanga, described Waliggo as an advocate of a free and professionalised media.
