COMPETITORS in this weekend’s KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally had cause to smile during reccing yesterday as the hitherto slippery roads had turned dry.

Following the week-long heavy rains, local competitors who went route reccing last weekend initially indicated the race would be slowed down by the muddy roads. The surface has however changed following a break in the rains.
“If it doesn’t rain again it is going to be a fast rally because the roads are generally good,” Ronald Ssebuguzi’s co-driver Cedric Buzabo warned.

Buzabo said: “Imagine we did a 16-km section recce in just 22 minutes. That means a rally car can do the section in about 12 minutes.”

Zambian Muna Singh, Tanzanian Hans Navraj, Zimbabwean James Whyte, Japanese Miyoshi Hideaki and South Africans Lola Verlage and Jon Williams with their co-drivers did recce yesterday. Emma Katto and Ssebuguzi sought permission to do recce with the foreign crews.

Recce ends today and in the afternoon competitors will go through administrative checks at ACE Motors on 7th Street Industrial Area.

No nonsense FIA technical man Viren Goricha, assisted by local scrutineer Joshua Mayanja will seal turbo chargers and mark gearboxes and differentials to ensure they can only be changed once per rally leg. As rally excitement rises, several local drivers yesterday cashed in on corporate sponsorship.

Bob Roberts will have his Mitsubishi Evo IV branded in Sports TV colours. The free to air sports television that will hit the airwaves in June, handed Roberts a sh8.2m sponsorship package yesterday.
Laila Mayanja got a financial boost from Jomayi Property Consultants and Worldwide Movers.

Susan Muwonge is backed by Movit Beauty Products and Suubi FM. Kenyan driver James Gatonye received a sh2.3m boost from GTV.

“This sponsorship coincides with the launch of the G-Africa channel which has exciting programmes and this is an extension of this feeling to our customers,” GTV’s Peter Mungoma said.
