ROSE Kabasa wrote a simple poem about violence against children and this won her one million shillings (sh1m). Kabasa’s poem was the best of 684 poems written by children from all over Uganda.

The competition was organised by Raising Voices, an organisation which works to prevent violence against women and children.

Kabasa, a 12-year-old pupil of St. Claire Day and Boarding Primary School in Pallisa District, wrote a poem about child labour and neglect. It was about an orphaned boy who had been turned into a slave.

She said that the money will help pay her school fees. Other winners were Samson, a student of Katikamu SDA School, who won sh500,000 and Onesmus Mukiibi, a pupil of St. Peter’s Kanyanya Primary School, who won sh250,000.
