EDITOR—I love the US because when it comes to double standards, they have no equal! In December, Kenya held a general election which caused controversy. There were reports of up to 1,500 deaths resulting from the crisis.

The US has a lady by the name Jendayi Fraser sometimes described as her government’s ‘top Africa diplomat’. This lady did all she could to get Mwai Kibaki who, for many observers, had lost and Raila Odinga (the supposed winner) to sit and agree on a way forward.

Fast forward to March 2008 and Zimbabwe goes to the polls. Robert Mugabe is apparently losing. Enter our Jendayi Fraser.

She promptly says the “USA knows” that MDC’s Morgan Tsvangirai won outright. What is more, the mighty US will seek United nations sanctions against Zimbabwe. One reason: because 450 Zimbabweans have been roughed up following the elections.

I never heard of threatened UN sanctions against Mwai Kibaki’s government in spite of the 1,500 deaths! Of course the US has every right to make statements about elections anywhere. Fraser can say that “every body knows Mugabe lost”.

This may or may not make any difference. But those who live in glass houses are usually advised not to throw too many stones. Does Fraser remember Florida and those dodgy shards. “Everybody knows" George W. Bush lost to Al Gore, but alas, it made no difference!
