KAMPALA - Budo Junior School matron Damalie Basirika and four security guards appear again in court today. Basirika,53, Julius Tumusiime, 30, Stanley Barisigara, 52, Andrew Byamukama, 52 and Matia Tumuhairwe, 37, were remanded in Luzira Prison on April 24 by the Buganda Road Court. They were charged with negligence of duty after 20 children died in a fire at the school recently

Refugees to be moved
KAMPALA - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is transferring about 1,800 Kenyan refugees from the Uganda/Kenya border to the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in Masindi district. The agency said the refugees were reluctant to return to Kenya. It added that Mulanda in Tororo, where the refugees had settled, was a temporary facility without the basic social amenities.

Mayor hails Buikwe victor

JINJA - The municipality mayor, Mohammed Baswale Kezaala, has congratulated Dr. Lulume Bayiga, the newly-elected MP for Buikwe South in Mukono district. He said Bayiga’s victory was a sign that the DP was gaining tremendous success. “The opposition parties form a minority in Parliament, so when we start to score victory, even in the rural constituencies, it shows that the ruling party is diminishing and come 2011, DP will capture all other areas.” Kezaala, who is also the DP vice-president for eastern region, said he joined politics with Bayiga in the 1990s. He commended the new MP for his resilience.

Man jailed for 10 years

MASAKA - A man who murdered his 82- year-old mother follwing a land dispute in Sembabule, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Vincent Kamukama, 41, on April 13, 2006 at Lwebitakuli village, cut off Rose Karukwanzi’s head with a panga as she was sleeping at night. Resident High Court judge Kibuuka Musoke convicted Kamukama, a charcoal burner, on charges of manslaughter. Prosecution said the woman had complained to the village court that her son had threatened to kill her for rejecting his request to sell part of the family land. She also informed her grand daughter, Sarah Nakimbugwe, about the threats on April 12, 2006.
